La Luz Bilingual Center, in the heart of vineyard country, is an upbeat, collegial community. We devote our energy to breaking down the barriers that may prevent full participation by all people of the Sonoma Valley Community.
La Luz actively seeks individual volunteers to assist in furthering our cause. Volunteer work mainly consists of:
Office Volunteer:
Assisting the full-time staff at La Luz with general office work at the La Luz Bilingual Center. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Assistance ideally includes devoting at least one day a week of volunteer work. Knowledge of Spanish is very helpful as volunteers handle phone inquiries and welcome and assist walk-in visitors with their everyday inquiries.
ESL Teacher Volunteer:
Assisting our "maestros" or being a "maestro" in English as second language ("ESL") classes. Our focus is on assisting new students who have recently immigrated to the United States and who speak little or no English. ESL classes focus on the developmen t of basic English survival skills for use in every day life. Maestros need NOT be fluent in Spanish. Some knowledge of Spanish can be helpful. Volunteers are normally available for classes which meet twice a week in the morning or once a week in the evening. La Luz welcomes substitute maestros who can be available on an on-call basis.
Special Events Volunteer:
Helping to plan and develop many of the annual activities and events that La Luz sponsors for the Sonoma Valley community throughout the year. Prominent events include Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos.
Your participation can make a real difference in the families we serve and in the life of the Sonoma Valley community. La Luz is ready for the future. We look forward to hearing from you for any of the positions described above.
