We all know that the key to success often lies in education, which is why La Luz Center is devoted to offering courses to our community at no- or low-cost. The majority of our classes focus on adult education. Although our society is not monolingual de jure, the fact remains that it is very difficult to succeed in the United States without a solid foundation in the English language.
In this age of information and technology, computer skills are also extremely useful in both the social and the work worlds. Our computer literacy classes give about 100 students per year the tools they need to communicate, access information, and create documents. General Equivalency Diploma (GED) classes taught in Spanish offer adults the opportunity to earn the equivalent of a high school degree, no matter what their previous education level. With individualized tutoring, test preparations, and scholarships for testing fees, students in this program can accomplish a major educational feat.
- On average, La Luz's Education Program teaches more than 500 students per year.
We also offer educational opportunities to high-school students. Each year, we serve as mentors for between five and ten high school students as they work on their senior projects, setting goals and following up with important developments in the projects. La Luz also gives out scholarships to graduating seniors planning on going to college. In 2009, we gave out a total of $8,600 in scholarships.
La Luz also provides educational resources to young children. While parents enrolled in English classes learn from qualified teachers, so too do their children. Our childcare program provides early enrichment to toddlers, preparing them for later education.
